Bauchi State Board of Internal Revenue engages twenty Local Government Directors of Revenue on Federal Government’s new Tax Reform

By Kamaluddeen Nuhu Ilelah:

Bauchi State Board of Internal Revenue has organised a sensitisation workshop for twenty Local Government Directors of Revenue to familiarise with the four new taxes recently created by the Federal Government in 2025.
The workshop, which brought together key revenue officers from across the state, was designed to prevent multiple taxation and harmonise revenue collection between state and local governments.
Speaking at the occassion ,the, Chairman Bauchi State Board of Internal Revenue, Alhaji Mu’azu Usman, explained that the primary objective of the workshop was to align revenue administration between state and local government areas.
He disclosed that a bill is currently before State House of Assembly to create a new law which would empower both state and local governments to collect specific revenues while harmonising their operations.
Alhaji Usman said the workshop was to brief the directors, as major stakeholders, on the contents and operation of the bill when it becomes active, as well as its benefits, emphasising that the key objective is to stop multiple taxation, which aligns with broader goals of the national tax reform.
Also speaking, Coordinating Director Bauchi State Board of Internal Revenue, Alhaji Baiti Yahaya, who presented a paper at the workshop, highlighted several key changes introduced by the new tax framework.
Alhaji Yahaya noted that under the new Value Added Tax sharing formula, federal government’s share has been reduced while states now receive a larger proportion, boosting what states get after Federation Account Allocation Committee disbursement, explaining that when there is more economic activity in a state, that state will receive a larger share of VAT.
He pointed out that low-income earners have been eased of tax burdens, as individuals earning less than eight hundred thousand per year are now exempted from taxation.
The new law, according to Alhaji Yahaya, emphasised the need for establishment of Local Government Revenue Committees in addition to addressing harmonisation of taxes and levies between state and local governments, ensuring that taxpayers know exactly how much to pay.
