MEMBER REPRESENTING DUGURI/GWANA CALLS FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF ROAD THAT LINKS TAFAWA BALEWA-BAUCHI-ALKALERI

BY RABI’U ISHAQ MUHAMMAD

Member representing Duguri/Gwana Constituency in the Bauchi State House of Assembly, Bala Abdullahi Dan, has called on the state government to construct the Kunsal–Sabon Gida–Njor–Gwan–Banjaran–Jamda road, measuring about 17 kilometres.

The lawmaker made the call while presenting a motion on the floor of the House, urging the Executive Arm of Government to give priority to the construction of the rural road, which he described as strategic to economic and social development.

According to him, the proposed road serves as a vital rural corridor linking productive communities across three local government areas of the state.

He explained that, the road starts from Lere/Bula in Tafawa Balewa Local Government Area, passes through Zungur/Galambi in Bauchi Local Government Area, and terminates at Duguri/Gwana in Alkaleri Local Government Area.

Bala Abdullahi Dan noted that the road does not only provide local access but also serves as an inter-local government route connecting people to markets, healthcare facilities, educational institutions and other social services, thereby playing a central role in the rural economy of the affected communities.

He further stated that the areas along the corridor are predominantly agrarian, with fertile and arable land suitable for the cultivation of crops such as rice, sugarcane, soya beans, sorghum, millet and beans, which constitute the main source of livelihood for the residents and contribute significantly to food supply within and outside the state.

The lawmaker, however, lamented that the absence of a motorable road has continued to limit farmers’ ability to transport their produce efficiently, attract investment and expand their productive capacity.

He added that the situation becomes worse during the rainy season, when communities are often cut off from the rest of the state.

According to him, poor accessibility has resulted in high transportation costs, post-harvest losses and limited access to essential services, thereby locking the communities out of the mainstream economy and undermining their development potential.

He therefore urged the House to mandate the Ministry of Works and other relevant ministries, departments and agencies to carry out an immediate technical assessment, costing and design of the road for possible inclusion in the state’s infrastructure development programmes.

The motion also called on the appropriate House Committees to interface with relevant authorities to ensure effective implementation and to report back to the House accordingly.
