The Office of the Senior Special Assistant on Internal Security to the Governor of Bauchi State has warned members of the public against the circulation of fake Unified Business Identification Cards within the state.
In a statement issued by the SSA on Internal Security, Babayo Liman, the office explained that the identification card initiative was originally approved by Governor Bala Mohammed, as part of efforts to strengthen internal security across the state.
The statement revealed that investigations uncovered the activities of some unscrupulous individuals allegedly producing and distributing counterfeit identification cards to traders and business owners while falsely claiming to represent the Bauchi State Government.
According to the SSA, the suspects have reportedly been extorting business owners and traders to the tune of Three Thousand Naira N3,000 for the fake cards, an act the Department of Internal Security described as a serious threat to public peace and security in the state.
Babayo Liman further disclosed that Governor Bala Mohammed has approved the immediate suspension of the production of the identification cards pending a comprehensive review and investigation.
He added that subsequent exercises concerning the cards would henceforth be handled by the Bauchi State Ministry of Internal Security and Home Affairs.
The office warned that anyone found engaging in the illegal collection of money or extortion of traders under the guise of issuing the cards would be arrested and prosecuted accordingly.
Members of the public were advised to seek clarification or guidance through the Office of the SSA on Internal Security or the Ministry of Internal Security and Home Affairs.
