
The Speaker, Bauchi State House of Assembly, Dr. Abubakar Y. Suleiman, has called on young people in the state to actively participate in politics as a means of promoting effective governance and sustainable democracy.
He made the call while addressing participants at a mentorship initiative for aspiring party leaders and prospective political candidates in Bauchi.
The programme was organised by the International Republican Institute (IRI) in collaboration with the National Endowment for Democracy (NED) to promote democratic values, political participation and the inclusion of under-represented groups in governance.
The Speaker described the youth as leaders of tomorrow and urged them to rise to emerging challenges by accepting leadership responsibilities with courage, integrity and a strong sense of public service.
He emphasised that, accountability, transparency and integrity must guide their actions in political engagement, noting that, these values form the foundation of effective and responsive governance.
He encouraged participants to make the most of the mentorship programme by actively engaging in discussions, asking questions, sharing ideas and learning from the experiences of seasoned political mentors.
According to him, the workshop also provides an opportunity for young people to build networks that will support their political aspirations and future leadership roles.
Dr. Abubakar Suleiman expressed appreciation to the International Republican Institute and the National Endowment for Democracy for organising the initiative and for their continued support toward strengthening democratic participation.
He stressed the need for collective efforts to ensure that the voices of young people are heard and that they are adequately prepared to lead with purpose, professionalism and commitment to democratic ideals.
