Bauchi State Government and L Press Tackles Farmer-Herder Conflicts

The recurring clashes between farmers and herders in Bauchi State have resulted in significant loss of life and property. To address this pressing issue, Governor Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed has established a committee comprising all stakeholders and L Press NGo to find a lasting solution.

The committee, led by Commissioner for Livestock Development Dr. Bala Musa Lukshi, visited Sabon Gari Gubi in Bauchi local government area to engage with local stakeholders, including farmers and herders. During the visit, Muhammad Nasir Madaki, a herder, and Malam Muhammad Lawan, a farmer’s representative, presented their grievances to the committee.

The herder Muhammad Nasir Madaki complained about farmland encroachment on grazing routes, while the farmer’s representative Malam Muhammad Lawan accused Fulani herders of crop destruction. Muhammad Dalibi stressed the need for a solution, citing new land boundaries at the federal and state levels. Alhaji Nasiru Musa, District Head of Durum, noted that laws governing farming on rocky terrain are no longer enforced.

Dr. Lukshi assured the people of Sabon Gari Gubi that the committee would work diligently to address the conflicts. He expressed optimism that the new ministry would bring an end to the perennial conflicts.

The Commissioner emphasized that the community holds the key to resolving the issue. He added that Nigeria’s livestock industry requires efforts to address its challenges and unlock its potential. By addressing the root causes of the conflict, the Bauchi State government aims to promote peaceful coexistence between farmers and herders.
