Bauchi Assembly moves to tackle Flood Threat in Bauchi

The Bauchi State House of Assembly has called on the Executive Arm of Government to mandate the Ministry of Environment to collaborate with relevant agencies in conducting a comprehensive assessment of Barkatalami Road in Bulkachuwa Katagum LGA.

The call was aimed to address flooding and stagnant water in the area.

The resolution followed the adoption of a motion sponsored by Dr. Nasiru Ala, member representing Madara/Chinade Constituency, who raised concern over the deteriorating condition of the road, noting that it poses serious risks to residents and neighbouring communities.

While presenting the motion, the lawmaker explained that persistent flooding has eroded the access road and weakened the soil structure, making the area increasingly unsafe.

He urged the government to reclaim and refill all identified waterlogged and low-lying areas to prevent further water accumulation, alongside the construction of proper drainage systems.

Presiding over the sitting, the Speaker, Dr Abubakar Sulaiman, commended the lawmakers for presenting timely motions aimed at addressing critical infrastructure challenges in their constituencies.

Meanwhile, the House also received and adopted a report from the Committee on Cooperatives, Small and Medium Enterprises, presented by the member representing Dass Constituency, following an inspection of skills acquisition centres across the 20 local government areas.

The committee recommended the provision of adequate security at the centres to safeguard facilities from vandalism and ensure sustainability.

It also called for the recruitment of qualified instructors with industrial expertise, engagement of volunteers to enhance operations, and the establishment of partnerships with the private sector to boost training opportunities for women and youths across the state.

The House thereafter adjourned its sitting to the 14th of April 2026.
