BASANE Urges Nomadic Parents to Embrace Education, Calls for Modern Approach to Cattle Rearing.

The Bauchi State Agency for Nomadic Education (BASANE) has expressed deep concern over the lack of commitment by nomadic parents toward the education of their children.

This concern was raised during a stakeholders’ sensitization meeting on Nomadic Education held in Misau Local Government Area. Speaking at the event, the Executive Secretary of the Agency, Alhaji Ahmad Abdullahi Bello, emphasized the need for nomadic communities to prioritize modern education alongside their traditional lifestyle.

Alhaji Bello noted that for generations, nomads have continued to roam across the country in pursuit of cattle breeding, often neglecting their children’s education.

He stressed that the time has come for nomadic children to stay in one place and acquire quality education to secure a brighter future.

The Secretary said, Nomadic children must be taught core subjects like English and Mathematics so that they can compete in fields such as science and engineering.

He called on traditional and religious leaders to give their full support to the agency’s efforts to improve educational opportunities for nomadic children. According to him, parents will be accountable in the hereafter for the upbringing and future of their children.

He added that there can be no national development without quality education. Nomadic children must be encouraged to settle in one place if they are to obtain meaningful education and certificates.

The Executive Secretary also urged nomads to adopt modern cattle rearing techniques, which he said would not only improve their livelihoods but also make room for their children to remain in school.

In his remarks, the Misau Local Government Education Secretary, Malam Munnir Bashir Darazo, commended BASANE for its proactive efforts, urged nomadic parents to support the agency’s vision and abandon outdated practices that hinder their children’s academic progress.

Darazo particularly highlighted the challenges faced by nomadic girls, many of whom are denied the opportunity to complete secondary education, let alone advance to higher levels.

He called on the state government to employ more teachers at both the primary and secondary levels to address the shortage of qualified educators and to restore parents’ confidence in the education system.

Some participants at the meeting praised the state government for prioritizing nomadic education and called for sustained support to ensure long-term success.
