ATBU Don Calls for Biological Solutions to Tackle Environmental Damage

A Professor of Ecology at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, ATBU, Bauchi, Professor Ahmed Abdulhameed, has called for the adoption of biological solutions to address the growing environmental damage in Nigeria.

Professor Abdulhameed made the call during the presentation of the University’s 48th inaugural lecture at the 1000-Seat Capacity Lecture Theatre, Yelwa Campus, Bauchi.

He said human activities through industrialization, urbanization, domestic waste, and agriculture have led to widespread pollution of land, air, and water across the country.

According to him, the continuous quest to exceed limits and over-exploit natural resources in pursuit of improved living standards has resulted in climate change and global warming, with serious consequences for ecosystems and human health.

The Professor of Ecology, however, expressed optimism that biological approaches can help reverse the trend.

He advocated for increased use of bio-fertilizers and bio-stimulants in agriculture, as well as a change in human attitude towards environmental conservation.

Earlier, the Vice Chancellor of ATBU, Professor Ibrahim Hassan Garba said the university remains committed to sustaining the academic exercise.

He commended the University’s Ceremonies Committee for its efforts and called for wider sensitization on the new policy that allows professors to apply to present their lectures, replacing the previous system based on seniority.

The Vice Chancellor also urged the Committee to invite academics and seasoned administrators from both public and private sectors to deliver periodic public lectures to enrich intellectual discourse in the university.

Describing Professor Abdulhameed as “an inspiring scholar, accomplished mentor, and internationally recognised researcher,” Professor Garba said his work underscores the urgent need for ecological stewardship and sustainable resource management.
