WANEP-Nigeria Calls for Greater Investment in Youth Leadership for Sustainable Peace

As the world marks International Youth Day 2026, the West Africa Network for Peacebuilding (WANEP-Nigeria) has called for increased investment in youth leadership, education, innovation, entrepreneurship, and civic participation.

In a press statement signed by its National Network Coordinator, Dr. Bridget Osakwe, in commemoration of International Day of the Youth, WANEP-Nigeria said this year’s theme, “Different Contexts, Common Aspirations,” highlights the shared aspirations of young people for peace, dignity, quality education, decent work, inclusion, and a sustainable future.

The organisation noted that despite challenges such as unemployment, insecurity, inequality, misinformation, and limited participation in decision-making, Nigerian youths continue to demonstrate resilience and leadership in their communities.

WANEP-Nigeria said it remains committed to promoting the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 2250 on Youth, Peace and Security, while engaging young people in conflict prevention, peacebuilding, and sustaining peace.

The organisation has also expanded its engagement with universities through awareness campaigns, public lectures, policy dialogues, and strategic partnerships to strengthen students’ understanding of the Youth, Peace and Security agenda.

Osakwe said young Nigerians are already demonstrating leadership and need enabling environments to participate meaningfully in decision-making and contribute to national development.

WANEP-Nigeria therefore urged government, development partners, the private sector, educational institutions, traditional and religious leaders, and civil society organisations to deepen investment in young people.

It reaffirmed its commitment to working with youths across Nigeria to promote dialogue, active citizenship, resilient communities, and sustainable peace and development.
