State Ministry of Education Launches Campaign Against Sexual Harassments in Schools

The Bauchi State Ministry of Education, in collaboration with a non-governmental organisation, Women Aid, has set up a high-powered committee to address rising cases of sexual harassment in schools across the state.

The committee, headed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Isa Moh’d Tahir, has commenced sensitisation visits to educational institutions, reaching six schools to educate students and teachers on the dangers and consequences of sexual harassment.

During a visit to Aminu Sale College of Education, Azare, the team engaged with the institution’s management and stakeholders on measures to curb the menace.

The Provost of the college, Professor Sadiya Mohammed, who received the delegation, noted that while some cases involve insiders, a significant number are perpetrated by outsiders who exploit vulnerable students without regard for institutional rules and regulations.

She assured that the college would collaborate with relevant stakeholders, including security agencies, to address the issue decisively.

The provost also commended the ministry’s intervention and pledged to intensify awareness campaigns and investigate any activities capable of tarnishing the institution’s reputation.

Speaking on behalf of Women Aid, the eader, Mrs Dora Steven, expressed concern over the prevalence of sexual harassment in schools, describing the trend as alarming.

She reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to sustained awareness and advocacy.

Mrs Steven further assured that reported cases would be treated with utmost seriousness and urged school authorities to engage the organisation whenever necessary to effectively tackle the problem.
