Nigerian Neighborhood Watch pledges to strengthen community policing against crime and criminality

The Nigerian Neighborhood Watch has pledged to strengthen community policing and sustain support in the fight against crime and criminality across society.

The Bauchi State Commander of the organization, Aliyu Bature Ahmed, made the pledge during the organization’s annual general meeting held in Bauchi.

He explained that the Nigerian Neighborhood Watch is a voluntary community-based security organization established in 1970 to complement the efforts of the Nigeria Police Force and government authorities in protecting the lives and property of Nigerians.

Aliyu Bature Ahmed added that the organization would continue to work in synergy with the Nigeria Police Force and other constitutionally recognized security agencies to ensure peaceful coexistence in Bauchi State.

Also speaking at the event, the National Commander of the Nigerian Neighborhood Watch, Sama’ila Shu’aibu, urged members of the organization to remain law-abiding and respect constituted authorities, noting that the group has no mandate to detain, punish, or prosecute offenders.

He advised personnel to remain vigilant and continue providing the Nigeria Police Force with relevant and timely information to sustain the fight against crime in society.

In his remarks, the Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of Community Policing, Lawal Babatunde, represented by the Assistant Commissioner of Police, Shehu Yusuf Yara, described the Nigerian Neighborhood Watch as a major stakeholder in community policing.

In a goodwill message, the Bauchi State Commissioner of Police, Sani Omolori Aliyu, represented by the Bauchi Township Divisional Police Officer, Mr Holman Simon, commended the Nigerian Neighborhood Watch for its contributions to maintaining peace and security in the state.
