Invest in Peace Education to Counter Violent Extremism – PAVE Network Urges Government

Governments at all levels have been called to invest in peace education as a long-term solution to preventing violent extremism and promoting sustainable peace in Nigeria.

The Chairman of the PAVE Network Nigeria, Mr. Jaye Gaskia, made this call at the conclusion of a Media Engagement and Stakeholders Dialogue on Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism (PCVE) held in Abuja.

He emphasized that peace education, alongside cultural exchange and inclusive history curricula, are essential tools in fostering national unity and addressing the root causes of conflict.

He noted that prior to colonization, Nigerians from diverse ethnic groups coexisted through trade, intermarriage, and mutual respect.

According to him, reviving that sense of historical connectedness through peace and history education in schools and tertiary institutions will strengthen national cohesion.

He said, interaction between diverse ethnic groups, especially when facilitated outside their immediate cultural environments builds the friendships that reinforce national unity.

Mr. Gaskia also blamed some political leaders for undermining the original purpose of Federal Unity Schools, which were established to promote integration among young Nigerians, saying the politicization of Unity Schools has weakened their capacity to serve as platforms for national integration.

He urged journalists to play a constructive role in preventing extremism by reporting objectively and factually, while building trust with communities.

The PAVE Network Chairman stressed that, peacebuilding requires understanding the historical root causes of conflict and implementing sustainable solutions.

In his remarks, the PAVE Network Media Consultant, Mr. Senator Iroegbu, highlighted the importance of conflict-sensitive reporting, advised journalists to maintain accuracy, balance, and cultural sensitivity, particularly when covering issues that could inflame tensions.

Mr Iroegbu added that, Journalists must be conscious of the power of their framing, saying reporting should inform and unite not escalate tensions.

Both speakers reaffirmed that peace education and responsible media practices are crucial in building a peaceful, united, and resilient Nigeria.
