Bauchi State Strengthens Primary Healthcare: Absorbs Casual Workers

Bauchi State Government has approved the engagement of more than 150 casual workers serving under the State Primary Healthcare Development Board as permanent staff after several years of voluntary service.

The Executive Chairman of the Board, Dr. Rilwanu Muhammad, disclosed this during a media briefing on the agency’s achievements over the past years.
Dr. Muhammad revealed that, through the World Bank–supported IMPACT initiative, a total of 125 Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) across the state have been revitalised with upgraded infrastructure, modern equipment and improved service delivery at a cost of ₦7.1 billion.

He said the Bauchi State Government has consistently released its counterpart funding to ensure sustainability of healthcare services, Where the sum of ₦351 million was released in 2020, ₦338 million in 2023, ₦410 million in 2024, and ₦872 million in 2025 to support essential drugs supply, PHC operations and overall health system strengthening across the 20 Local Government Areas of the state.

The Executive Chairman said, from the funds, the agency procured three new branded vehicles to enhance the efficient and rapid distribution of vaccines and essential medicines to health facilities statewide.

Dr. Muhammad also disclosed that the state government has sustained free antenatal care and delivery services in 212 PHCs—one in each ward across the state, to reduce maternal and neonatal mortality, among others.

The Executive Chairman commended Governor Bala Muhammad for consistently allocating 15 percent of the state’s annual budget to the health sector since assuming office in 2019.

According to him, Bauchi State has achieved 90 percent coverage in the Measles-Rubella vaccination campaign, due to strong support from the state government and development partners.

He unveiled plans by the agency to introduce malaria vaccination, expand the use of Small Quantity Liquid based Nutrition Supplement to prevent malnutrition, sustain diphtheria vaccination campaigns, and continue the State Immunisation Plus Days across the state.
