BAUCHI STATE LEGISLATIVE MEMBER PRESENTS BILL FOR REGULATION OF SCRAP AND WASTE ACTIVITIES

The Member representing Chinade/Madara in the state house of assembly Dr. Nasiru Ahmed Ala has presented a bill to regulate the activities of scrap scavengers and illegal wastes pickers in the State.

Presenting the private bill during plenary, Dr Nasiru Ala said the move will help significantly in sanitizing the business of scrap metal dealers and other related objects as well as prevent theft of infrastructure, protecting the environment from improper disposal of scrap metal, safeguarding public safety by monitoring the origin and movement of scrap metal.

According to him, the bill when passed into law will ensure strict regulations in combating theft of critical infrastructures, such as illegal removal of valuable metal components from public infrastructures, ensure proper regulations on environmental protection by ensuring scrap metals and other related objects are collected and recycled responsibly.

Other objective of the bill he mentioned in his prayers include preventing environmental contamination from improper disposal in landfills or waterways, safeguard consumers from being exploited by unscrupulous dealers through price manipulation or buying stolen scrap metal and provide proper documentation and licensing.

The lawmaker note with dismay that, the scavengers take advantage of even going to Mosque particularly during Fridays and Church attendance on Sundays to invade houses and cart away valuable materials, leaving hapless citizens with tales and woe upon their return from prayers and services.

Dr. Nasiru Ala revealed that the bill has no other time to be passed into law than now, considering the rampant destruction of innocent peoples’ properties and also vandalization of government’s facilities in order to condemn useful metal into waste in the State.

The bill after legislative deliberation was referred to the house committee on land and is given one month report back for consideration.

Meanwhile, the house of assembly has passed into a bill for a law to establish water user association in Bauchi.

Presenting the bill for third reading during plenary, the chairman house committee on water resources Ahmed Muhammed Lele said the bill is for the benefit of the state water sector with emphasis on sustainable power on irrigation for economic growth and development of the state.

According to the lawmaker, the bill will provide a level playground for all water users especially irrigation farmers in boosting their capital income , create job for the teaming youth and improve socioeconomic wellbeing of the state.
