Bauchi State Assembly passes for second reading, bill to establish Bauchi State Disability Commission

Bauchi State House of Assembly has passed for second reading a bill seeking to establish the Bauchi State Disability Commission and ensure greater protection for persons with disabilities in the state.

Leading the debate on the bill during plenary presided over by the Speaker, Dr. Abubakar Y. Suleiman, the sponsor of the bill, Hon. Barr. Habibu Umar, representing Kirfi Constituency, explained that the private member’s bill seeks to repeal and re-enact the existing law establishing the Bauchi State Agency for Persons with Disability enacted in 2010.

He said the existing legislation is inadequate to address current realities and challenges faced by persons with disabilities, stressing that the proposed law aims to strengthen and expand the legal framework to promote inclusivity and ensure better protection of their rights.

Hon. Habibu Umar therefore appealed to his colleagues to support the bill, describing it as a step towards improving the welfare and opportunities of persons with disabilities in Bauchi State.

In his ruling, Speaker Abubakar Y. Suleiman referred the bill to the House Committee on Humanitarian Affairs for further legislative action.
