Bauchi Lawmakers push for urgent upgrade of rural road network to unlock Agricultural Potential

The Bauchi State House of Assembly has called on the Executive Arm of Government to prioritize the construction and rehabilitation of a major rural road linking communities in Zungur/Galambi Constituency, as part of efforts to enhance economic activities and improve access to essential services.

The resolution followed the adoption of a motion sponsored by the member representing the constituency, Sa’idu Yusuf Ahmed, and co-sponsored by the Speaker, Dr. Abubakar Y. Suleiman, the Deputy Speaker, Umaru Jamilu Dahiru, alongside other lawmakers.

Presenting the motion during plenary, Yusuf Ahmed underscored the urgent need to rehabilitate the approximately 24–25 kilometre road corridor connecting Kangere, Eole, Bidolo, Zangon Gelan, Unguwan Makaman Gelan, Gaftan Makera, Dagun, Gunduman Musal and Burum.

He noted that the road, last rehabilitated during the Tatari administration, has deteriorated significantly, causing hardship for residents and restricting access to markets, healthcare facilities, schools and other socio-economic opportunities.

The lawmaker described rural road infrastructure as critical to economic growth, particularly in agrarian communities, stressing that improved access would reduce post-harvest losses, enhance livelihoods and strengthen rural-urban connectivity.

He further stated that the rehabilitation would improve security response, expand government presence in rural areas and support broader goals of poverty reduction and balanced infrastructure development.

Adopting the motion, the Assembly urged the state government to prioritise the project and ensure adequate budgetary allocation for its execution.

It also mandated the relevant committee to conduct an on-the-spot assessment of the affected communities and report back for further legislative action.

Speaking to journalists after plenary, Sa’idu Yusuf Ahmed reiterated the importance of the project, noting that the constituency is a major producer of agricultural commodities.

He added that despite ongoing efforts to rehabilitate a hospital in Bidolo, poor road conditions continue to hinder access to healthcare services.

The lawmaker commended residents for their efforts in maintaining the road through community initiatives and encouraged sustained support pending government intervention.
