Bauchi Assembly holds Public Hearing on Chieftaincy Appointment and Deposition Bill 2025.

Bauchi State House of Assembly Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs has conducted a public hearing on a bill seeking to establish the Bauchi State Chieftaincy (Appointment and Deposition) Law, 2025.

Speaking during the session, the Speaker of the House, Dr. Abubakar Y. Suleiman, said the bill forwarded to the Assembly by Governor Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed, aims to gather inputs from critical stakeholders across all emirates in the state toward the proposed amendment.

Dr. Abubakar Suleiman explained that the move was in response to persistent calls by traditional rulers for the creation of additional districts to enhance grassroots administration.

He urged the House Committee to carefully study all submissions, views, and recommendations before compiling its final report.

In his remarks, the Chairman of the House Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Bala Abdullahi Dan, said the proposed legislation seeks to promote justice, fairness, and transparency in addressing the clamour by various communities for the creation of new districts, emirates, and chiefdoms.

He assured that the process is free from political motives, stressing that only deserving communities will benefit after due assessment, while urging others to remain patient.

Bala Abdullahi Dan added that, the exercise aims to strengthen traditional institutions, enhance local participation in governance, and preserve Bauchi State’s rich cultural heritage.

In their goodwill messages, the Emir of Katagum, Alhaji Umar Faruk II, and the Emir of Misau, Alhaji Ahmed Sulaiman, commended the initiative and urged citizens to embrace reforms that promote peace and development.

Representatives of State Local Government Service Commission, Ministry of Justice, Ministry for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Nigerian Bar Association, and the Bauchi State Police Command,all expressed support for the legislative process.

Various community groups, religious leaders, and civil society organizations made submissions in support of the proposed law, while others raised concerns, particularly regarding the proposed Sayawa Chiefdom in Tafawa Balewa Local Government Area.
