The Bauchi State Agency for Mass Education (BASAME) has reaffirmed its commitment to providing digital literacy training for Almajiri Tsangaya schools across the state.
During a recent visit to the Tsangaya Learning Centres in Bauchi, BASAME’s Executive Secretary, Alhaji Nasiru Mohammed, emphasized the agency’s dedication to equipping marginalized learners with essential 21st-century skills.
Represented by the Director of Administration and Human Resources, Alhaji Yakubu Aliyu Dahuwa, Mohammed noted that the visit was a significant step in ensuring that digital learning initiatives align with the students’ needs and contribute to bridging the digital divide.
He highlighted that many students in the Tsangaya system lack access to formal education, digital skills, and modern learning tools, putting them at a disadvantage in today’s technology-driven world.
The executive secretary, said through this initiative, the agency aims to empower these learners with digital competencies, online safety education, and economic opportunities.
Alhaji Mohammed also commended 48percent.org for its invaluable support in making the project a reality.
He expressed optimism about the program’s impact, stating, that the journey has begun, and can’t wait to see the transformation unfold.
Speaking during the visit, the Chief Executive Officer of Zee Tech Foundation, Mr. Zubairu Jibril, elaborated on the scope of the digital literacy training. The program will equip Almajiri students with basic ICT skills for learning and communication, create pathways to economic opportunities by teaching them how to develop and sell digital products, and improve access to educational resources beyond traditional learning methods. Additionally, the initiative will enhance online safety awareness, ensuring students are protected from digital risks.
Jibril emphasized the importance of community engagement in ensuring the project’s sustainability. “We interacted with Tsangaya students to understand their educational challenges, engaged with teachers and community leaders on project implementation, and strengthened our partnership with BASAME to ensure long-term success,” he said.
Teachers and students at the Tsangaya schools visited expressed their enthusiasm for the initiative, recognizing its potential to help them adapt to the evolving digital world.
Some of the teachers said with the commitment of BASAME, support from partners, and the enthusiasm of students and educators, this initiative is set to transform the educational landscape for Almajiri learners, ensuring they are not left behind in the digital era.
