ATBU Non-Academic Staff Join nationwide protest over unpaid salaries, allowances

The Joint Action Committee of the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi, has joined the nationwide protest organized by the non-academic staff unions of Nigerian universities to demand the payment of their withheld salaries and allowances by the Federal Government.

The protest, which took place at the university’s Yelwa Campus, was led by the JAC Chairman, Comrade Salisma Dauda Jatau, who also serves as the Chairman of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), ATBU Chapter.

Addressing newsmen after the protest, Comrade Sulisma Jatau said the action was part of a long-standing struggle over the non-implementation of agreements and entitlements reached with the Federal Government since 2009.

He explained that, although the government had signed most of the agreements reached with the unions, it had consistently failed to implement them despite repeated notices and appeals from the JAC leadership.

Also speaking, the Chairman of the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), ATBU Chapter, Comrade Yusuf Dan’Azumi Yusuf, commended members for their solidarity and urged them to remain steadfast as the unions intensify pressure on the government to meet their demands.

During the protest, members carried placards with inscriptions such as “Unjust Distribution of ₦50 Billion Earned Allowances,” “Pay Our Two Months Withheld Salaries,” and “Implement Our Agreements Now.”

The nationwide protest was organized by the Joint Action Committee of SSANU and NASU to press home their demands for fair treatment and the immediate settlement of all outstanding payments.
