Red Cross Chairman Calls for Unity, Compassion as Nigeria Faces Growing Humanitarian Challenges

The Chairman of the Nigerian Red Cross Society, Alhaji Aminu Abubakar, has called on Nigerians to uphold the values of humanity, unity, and compassion in the face of growing humanitarian challenges across the country.

In a statement signed by the Branch Executive Chairman to commemorate the 2026 World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day celebrated on Friday, May 8, Alhaji Aminu Abubakar said the global theme, “United in Humanity,” reflects the collective responsibility of individuals and organizations to support vulnerable communities affected by conflict, displacement, disasters, and economic hardship.

The chairman noted that volunteers of the Nigerian Red Cross Society continue to provide humanitarian assistance in difficult and remote areas across the country, including flood-ravaged and conflict-affected communities.

He commended the commitment and sacrifice of volunteers, describing them as the backbone of the humanitarian organization.

According to him, the increasing complexity of humanitarian operations requires greater discipline, accountability, and protection of neutral humanitarian space to enable aid workers to effectively discharge their responsibilities.

He stressed the need for compassion to be matched with responsibility and professionalism at all levels of service delivery.

Alhaji Aminu Abubakar also assured vulnerable persons that the Nigerian Red Cross Society would continue to support communities through humanitarian interventions aimed at promoting resilience and recovery.

He further appealed to governments, development partners, and the public to support and protect humanitarian activities, describing such efforts as essential to human dignity and social stability.

The statement reaffirmed the commitment of the organization to serving humanity with integrity while urging Nigerians to remain united in promoting peace, dignity, and support for those in need.
