More than 1,600 residents of Alkaleri Local Government Area in Bauchi State have benefited from free surgeries, drugs, and a range of medical and community services during a Medical Caravan organized by the Islamic Medical Association of Nigeria (IMAN).

The Chairman of IMAN, Bauchi State Chapter, Dr. Yakubu Shirama, disclosed this during the outreach held in Bajama village.

He explained that the medical caravan is a routine humanitarian initiative conducted based on available resources to ease the health and socio-economic challenges faced by vulnerable communities.

According to him, the exercise brought together a broad team of professionals, including medical doctors, nurses, community health officers, veterinary doctors, and agricultural experts, reflecting IMAN’s one-health approach that integrates human, animal, and environmental wellbeing.

Dr. Shirama noted that the outreach provided free surgeries, medications, animal treatments, health education, and farming advisory services aimed at helping rural farmers improve productivity.

He added that the caravan also offered free barbing and women’s hairdressing services, showing IMAN’s commitment to supporting all aspects of community life.

The IMAN Chairman said, as Muslim professionals in the health sector, they are committed to giving back to society in ways that bring positive impact and spiritual reward, added that every act of kindness will be accounted for by Allah.

He commended the dedication of the volunteers and encouraged them to remain steadfast as IMAN continues extending support to underserved communities across Bauchi State and beyond.

Dr. Shirama emphasized that the services cut across all faiths, ages, and genders, stressing that humanity remains IMAN’s guiding principle.

He urged other professional bodies to also embrace community service as part of their responsibility to society.

During an interactive session with Bajama residents, Dr. Dauda Muhammad Haruna of the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital encouraged them to maintain self-hygiene, environmental sanitation, regular hand-washing, and to avoid self-medication.

Also speaking, Dr. Ibrahim Abdullahi, Deputy Surgery Manager in Yelwan Duguri, revealed that the team conducted about 100 surgical procedures free of charge, saying the surgeries included hernia repairs in men, women, and children, hydroceles, lipomas; and other common conditions.

The Deputy Chairman of IMAN, Dr. Sa’idu Ali, added that people trooped in large numbers from Alkaleri LGA and neighbouring communities to access the surgeries and other services.
