The Bauchi State High Court has conducted a sensitization meeting for stakeholders on the operations of Small Claims Courts held at council chamber of Local Government Secretariat.
Speaking at the event, Amina Ahmad Garba, who represented the Chief Registrar Bauchi State, said the Small Claims Courts were established to provide a simple and speedy process for recovering debts, particularly among traders.
She explained that the courts are designed to deliver judgments within 60 days to ensure quick resolution of disputes.
According to her , the Small Claims Courts began operations in 2023 and currently function within Magistrate Courts across several local government areas, including Bauchi, Katagum, Ningi, Alkaleri, Darazo, Misau, and Bogoro.
She advised business owners and lenders to always document transactions with written agreements and witnesses.
Also speaking, the chairman of the Bogoro Traders and Artisans Association, Mr Victor Madang Audu, commended the judiciary for the sensitization, admitting that many traders were previously unaware of the courts.
He pledged that the association would enlighten its members on how to use the courts to settle debt disputes and called for more public awareness on legal matters.
Delivering his goodwill message, the National Orientation Agency Bogoro Mr John D Daduut promised to enlighten business owners on court usage, kinds of cases to be filed, and how to file claims.
Mr Daduut said this would help reduce business conflicts and boost confidence in doing business locally, saying it further helps in resolving disputes quickly and cheaply without needing expensive lawyers.
Responding, the Chairman Bogoro Local Government,Mr Yakubu Lawi Sumi commended the initiative describing it as a way forward for providing quick, simple and clear justice for small business owners.
Mr Yakubu said the courts would help to address the growing debt-related challenges faced by the business community in the area.
