Bauchi State First Lady, Dr. Aisha Bala Muhammad, has reiterated her commitment to support the education and overall wellbeing of persons with disabilities in the state.
Dr. Aisha Bala Muhammad gave the assurance at the commemoration of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, organised by the Bauchi State Agency for Persons with Disabilities in collaboration with the United Nations Population Fund.
The First Lady said she joined the celebration to encourage persons with disabilities to be self-reliant and believe in their abilities to contribute meaningfully to society. She urged them to desist from street begging and ensure that their children have access to quality education, warning against drug abuse and gender-based violence.
She assured continued support to the agency, especially in ensuring that children with disabilities receive quality education and are nurtured to become responsible citizens and future leaders.
In his goodwill message, the Speaker of the Bauchi State House of Assembly, Abubakar Y. Sulaiman, represented by the member representing Kirfi Constituency, Barrister Habib Umar, congratulated persons with disabilities for joining the global community in marking the day.
He pledged to convey their requests to the House for necessary action and encouraged them to utilize their talents for self-sufficiency.
In her welcome address, the Secretary of the Agency, Brisca I. Jauro, said the International Day of Persons with Disabilities is a global event aimed at raising awareness on issues affecting persons with disabilities, including advocacy against street begging.
She commended the First Lady for her continuous support, as well as development partners such as UNFPA, AGILE, and others for their contributions to the agency’s initiatives.
Highlights of the event included the presentation of special wheelchairs donated by Qatar to beneficiaries, talent displays by persons with disabilities, and a donation of N2 million by the First Lady.
