A bill to establish Bauchi state safety and security of schools commission passes second reading at BAHA.

The Speaker Of the Bauchi state house of assembly Abubakar Y. Sulaiman had presented a bill for a law to establish Bauchi state safety and security of schools commission.

Leading a debate on the private bill, Abubakar Suleiman said the bill when passed into law would have impact in providing a legal framework for the protection of school pupils, infrastructures and other social amenities from violence attacks, abductions, kidnappings and other forms of violence affecting educational institutions.

He said bill would aligned with the UN safety school declaration in implementing comprehensive safety measures which will address threats affectively and safeguard the wellbeing of students, staff and communities for the growth and development of the State.

Abubakar Suleiman added that the Commission’s functions is to provide linkages with other government oversight mechanisms and institutions, approve programmes to be implemented by the Commission in order to address existing gaps in the safety and security initiatives and will be presenting timely annual report to the State governor and the state house of assembly on the status of safety and security in schools in the state among others.

Contributing to the bill during plenary presided by the deputy speaker Jamilu Umaru Dahiru, member representing Bogoro constituency Musa Wakili Nakwada, Builder Sa’idu Sulaiman from Darazo constituency and Dr. Nasiru Ahmed Ala said the bill is apt and timely, realizing that education plays a pivotal role in nation building and ensure safe, conducive environment and free violence as well as effective learning in Bauchi schools.

The bill is seconded by the house deputy majority leader Babayo Muhammad Akuyam, member representing Hardawa Constituency.

The bill was referred to the house joint committees on security and education and were given one month to report back for legislative action.
