The Director General and Chief Executive Officer of Nigerian Building and Road Research Institute, Professor Samson Duna has called on the Federal Government to establish an emergency response team to check building collapse in the country

Professor Samson Duna made the call while delivering a Public Lecture on Building Collapse in Nigeria: A preventable Human Infliction organised by Faculty of Engineering and Engineering Technology, Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi held at Yelwa Campus

This measure, he argues, is crucial to
addressing the frequent building collapses across Nigeria and ensuring stringent enforcement of building laws.

He attributed over sixty percent rate of building collapses in the country to used of substandard materials and quacks engineers at sites

Professor Samson Duna called on Governors to establish functional laboratories to be manage by qualified and certified engineers in each states and FCT aimed at testing soil and other building materials before embarking on constructions

On his part, the Acting Vice Chancellor of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi Professor Sani Usman Kunya said the chose of the topic for the public lecture and presenter was apt and timely, emphasising the urgent collaboration of relevant stakeholders towards addressing building collapse in the country citing the recent tragedy in Jos, where the collapse of a building claimed lives of students and injured several others.

The Vice Chancellor also attributed building collapse to corruption among regulatory officials, leading to inadequate monitoring and compliance with building codes and legislation.
