The Federal Road Safety Corps, Bauchi State Command has embarked on sensitization campaign for the twenty-twenty four Ember Months aimed to tackle reckless driving.
Speaking at the press conference held at the NUJ secretariat Bauchi, the FRSC Sector Commander Istifanus Ibrahim said the theme of the ember month campaign is ” Speak up against Dangerous Driving: Crashes kill more passengers that drivers”
According to him, the campaign became imperative, due occurrences of crashes in Nation’s highways.
The Sector Commander revealed that, ember months mark a time when Nigerians travel extensively across the country for family reunions, festivals, meeting and ceremonies among others.
Commander Istifanus, noted that, congestion, road crashes lead to loss of lives and properties which worsened by the reckless behaviors of some motorists as well as creating a distressing environment for travelers, government agencies, stakeholders including the FRSC.
He also revealed that the Corps has intensified it’s efforts to ensure smooth traffic flow, reduce road crashes and to create a safer motoring environment nationwide.
Istifanus Ibrahim stated that the Corps has reassessed the state of road safety and traffic management in Nigeria with a focus on reviewing and improving strategies in all fronts.
He encouraged the passengers to assert their rights, thereby curbing drivers’ excesses, as it contained in records that more passengers are killed in road traffic crashes than drivers, hence the need to be vigilant while on transit.
He cushioned motorists to take full responsibility of their actions and inactions on the road by maintaining their vehicles, obeying traffic laws and other road regulations.
Istifanus noted that, the enlightenment campaign through media organizations during ember months is very crucial through sustained campaigns on road Safety rules to reduce carnages, including deaths on roads
The FRSC Sector Commander, appreciated the support and assistance the Corp is receiving over many years from the state government.
On his part, the state NUJ Chairman Comrade Umar Sa’idu called on the state FRSC to arrest and punish any person found using journalists press tags on their vehicles not a journalist.
He said Journalists have a role to play on enlightening the public about the dangers of reckless driving on the roads and called on members of the pen proffession to give adequate Publicity in that regard.
