Bauchi State Assembly to enact laws that will ban persistence cutting down of tress in the state.

Bauchi State House of Assembly has sought the support and cooperation of the local government councils for harmonious working relationships that would bring to an end the indiscriminate cutting down of trees for charcoaYusuf Sa’idu Ahmadl production in the state.

The chairman house committee on Environment and Forestry Yusuf Sa’idu Ahmad discklosed this during the continuation of the committee’s familiarisation tour to Ganjuwa and Dass Local Government Areas.

Yusuf Sa’idu expressed worries over illegal felling of trees without planting replacement  saying it may lead to desertification and environmental degradation in most parts of the state.

According to him, to mitigate the trend, the committee is working to enact laws that will ban the persistence cutting down of trees to reclaim the environment and ensuring that tree seedlings are planted across the state.

The Committee Chairman also noted that the visit allowed them to exercise their mandate and ensure successful achievement of the local councils towards actualising the aim and objectives of government at the local levels.

Responding, the caretaker committee Chairman of Ganjuwa Local Government and his Dass counterpart said the visit is timely as the council’s primary responsibility is to have an open door policy towards addressing the state’s challenges at the local levels, stressed the need for the collaboration with the committee to achieve the desired objectives.

They commended the committee for embarking on the oversight function to assess various local governments and their operations towards tackling issues of illegal felling of trees and other environmental challenges.
