
Twenty-five nursing mothers from Bauchi Local Government Area have participated in a one-day capacity building training on food demonstration, organized by the Child Health and Mortality Prevention Surveillance of the College of Medical Sciences, Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi.
The training featured practical demonstrations on preparation of local foods, detection of acute malnutrition, and its management using indigenous food ingredients.
Speaking at the event, the Lead Data to Action of the programme, Dr. Abubakar Sari, said the training was organised following a report by Médecins Sans Frontières which listed Bauchi among the states affected by acute malnutrition.
He explained that the participants were expected to step down the knowledge gained to their various communities.
Also speaking, a nutrition expert from ATBU Teaching Hospital Bauchi, Dietitian Ibrahim Ladeh, noted that, many local food ingredients often neglected are highly nutritious.
He cautioned against excessive use of preservatives, warning that they are among the leading causes of cancer.
Ibrahim Ladeh urged parents to pay closer attention to the care of their children, particularly during early childhood, to enable them to live a healthier life.
He further encouraged nursing mothers to practice exclusive breastfeeding, pointing out that breast milk is made up of 88.5 per cent water.
Some of the participants interviewed, Jamila Dahiru and Azumi Bala, commended CHAMPS for organizing the training and pledged to use the knowledge acquired for the wellbeing of their families and communities.
