Communication Experts calls for proper utilization of AI journalism.

Communication experts have emphasized the importance of utilizing Artificial Intelligence (AI) in journalism, while maintaining ethical standards and responsible practices.

The call was made during a seminar on “Journalism Ethics in the Era of AI,” organized by the students of Mass Communication, Federal Polytechnic Bauchi, held at 510 hall of the institution.

In his paper presentation, the Deputy Chairman of the Bauchi State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists NUJ, Ahmad Muhammad Kaigama stressed the need for journalists and students to be neutral and ensure balance as well as fairness in their reportage.

Kaigama also cautioned against the unethical use of AI, emphasizing the importance of thorough research and media literacy.

Other discussants, including Dr. Bello Madaki Beli, Malam Hassan Alhaji Hassan, and Abubakar El-sadik, concurred that AI is here to stay and challenged users to revisit and verify the work done by machines to avoid errors.

In his contribution at the seminar, Malam Abdul Ahmed Burra, a lecturer with the Department of Mass Communication, Abubakar Tatari Polytechnic, Bauchi, emphasized the importance of maximizing AI usage in research.

He equally called on students to harness the potential of AI in their research, while also exercising caution and responsibility and recommend that, the department should include AI application in the course of Multi-Media Journalism, to equip students with the necessary skills and knowledge to navigate the complexities of AI in journalism.

In his remarks, the Rector, Federal Polytechnic Bauchi, Malam Sani Usman, represented by the Deputy Registrar, Rabiu Wada, commended the organizers for the timely seminar.

In a welcome address, the Head of Mass Communication Department, Shamsu Audu Dauda, urged participants to utilize the ideas shared during the seminar in their academic journey and to step down the knowledge gained to others.

Students who attended the seminar have promised to utilize the knowledge gained and share it with others.
