BRC Radio Bauchi
BRC Radio Bauchi

The project for establishing the Bauchi Radio Corporation commenced in the early months of 1977, by the Federal Government of Nigeria, under the Nigerian Broadcasting Corporation, NBC. From then, the state government also developed interest and worked in collaboration with the NBC to nurture the station.

By December that year all necessary installations of basic equipment for transmission were successfully put in place. Test transmission was however delayed until 18th February, 1978, while full transmission commenced two days later, on 20th February, 1978. Expanding to be the fourth largest broadcasting outfit in the country, after NTA, FRCN, and AIT.

At the time of inception, Mr Herbert O. Uneagbu, who was then the state controller NBC, headed the station until the time of the transfer of the station to Bauchi State government. Shortly, in July, 1979, late Malam Adamu Muhammad Misau, as the first indigenous Officer from the state was appointed to head the pioneer management team as the first General Manager.

The station in 1977 started under the name NBC, then in 1979 the name Bauchi Broadcasting Corporation NBC, was adopted to replace the NBC. This change of name lasted for only 6 years, because the current name of Bauchi Radio Corporation, BRC was finally assumed to replace the Bauchi Broadcasting Corporation [BBC].

Interestingly, Bauchi Radio Corporation was the first to run an FM Radio Channel in the entire Northern part of the country in the early 1980s.

Like all other older radio stations in the country, BRC has its own share of experiences and developmental challenges, especially when measured against the background of mixed approaches by different governments in the state in handling issues of information management and dissemination. However, under a current strong management the corporation is transforming at a supersonic speed.

With the current digitization drive in the country, the present BRC management under Alhaji Chindo Waziri, a visionary administrator to the core, a perfectionist and a professional broadcaster par excellence , is going through a breakthrough transformation period, just to remain one of the leading broadcast institutions in the country.

The ability of the BRC to further enrich its Programmes contents, also strengthened its broadcast services and widened its areas of grass roots coverage, especially with the location of rural-based FM Radio Stations in communities across the terrains of the State, to give the corporation competitive edge in the North-East geopolitical zone to attract more partnership and collaboration with international broadcast organizations such as BBC, VOA and DW Radio.
