BAUCHI STATE GOVERNMENT LEADS NIGERIA IN ACHIEVING SAFE SANITATION SYSTEM

Bauchi State has been lauded for its pioneering role in addressing open defecation through the development of a comprehensive Fecal Sludge Management guideline, a crucial step towards achieving safe sanitation system across Nigeria.
The Chief of Field Office, UNICEF Bauchi, Dr. Nuzhat Rafique, commended the state for its leadership role and praised its efforts in creating a roadmap that other states can emulate with a view to tackling open defecation and improving public health.

Represented by UNICEF’s WASH Officer Mrs. Nanbam Michael Dawap, Dr. Rafique, made the statement during a Lesson Learning meeting held in Bauchi, which brought together representatives from Gombe and Plateau States.
The UNICEF Chief of Field Office, emphasized UNICEFs ongoing advocacy for the widespread use of constructed toilets and the importance of the full sanitation chain ranging from collection, transportation, storage, and recycling of waste as key components of an effective sanitation system.
She stated that such efforts could not only enhance public health but also contribute to economic development in the country, reiterating that Bauchi’s initiative has set an inspiring example for other states.

Dr. Rafique expressed the hope that Gombe and Plateau States would adopt similar approaches, creating a ripple effect across Nigeria to end open defeacation.
In his address, the Commissioner of the Bauchi State Ministry of Housing and Environment, Danlami Ahmed Kawule lamented that Bauchi’s commitment to improving sanitation has been strongly supported by various partners, including UNICEF, WaterAid, and other donors, expressed gratitude for the technical support provided by these organizations.
He highlighted how their collaboration has positioned Bauchi as a leading state in the quest for safely managed sanitation.

Alhaji Kawule also pointed out the development of the Climate Resilient Fecal Sludge Management Implementation Strategy 2025-2030, a document created by the Bauchi State Environmental Protection Agency with UNICEF’s support.
The Commissioner said the strategy aims to enhance the resilience of the states sanitation systems, taking into account its unique environmental challenges, stressed that the plan would help create a sustainable and resilient fecal sludge management sector in the state.
On his part the executive chairman of Pankshin Local Government in Plateau State, Mr. Felix Amos Gonuna, who represented the Association of Plateau State Local Government

He pledged the full support of ALGON to ensure the success of these initiatives at the grassroots level, promising to collaborate with development partners to improve the quality of life for their communities.
